AI Technology Is Making Us Safer: Is That So?

Original article was published by Ajay Kapoor on Artificial Intelligence on Medium

What is Artificial Intelligence?

AI is the latest technology which makes machines to perform the task with intelligence. These machines do not perform like traditional machines which were used to programmed for some specific, repetitive motion. Instead, these machines are capable enough for adapting to different situations.

This is a must mention here that Artificial intelligence is a kind of technology that deals with complex tasks and are based on a complex concept which, if managed by the simple language, would be easy to understand.

Now let’s have a look at some of the stats:

According to the survey,

“The worldwide market revenue for artificial intelligence is forecast to grow from 2015 to 2025, although different studies suggest variations in just how much the global market size will increase by. On the whole, the global AI market revenue is forecast to increase from around five billion U.S. dollars in 2015 to a little over 125 billion in 2025.”

Another keen look at another Stat:

“The current AI market race is led by IBM, which holds a global market share of more than nine percent. IBM is also the leading company in terms of active machine learning and AI patents worldwide with more than 5,500 patent families as of July 2019. Next to IBM in the global AI, patent races are Microsoft and Samsung, each within 500 patent families from IBM.”

So this is how AI is impacting our surroundings and securing our present and future. Now I would like to introduce you to the facts in how many ways AI is making our industries secure safer. In order to do this, I would like to touch certain industries in which AI is contributing individually and making them safer.

So, let’s start with certain parameters or industries,

How is Artificial Intelligence Making Transport Safer?

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is already having a profound impact on the way we interact with the world around us. Like a powerful set of technologies that can help humans solve everyday problems, AI has significant applications in several fields. One such field transport, where AI applications are already disrupting the way we move people and goods. From scanning traffic patterns to reduce road accidents and optimizing sailing routes to minimize emissions, AI is creating opportunities to make transport safer, more reliable, more efficient, and cleaner.

AI in Transport; Market Size

AI has already begun to dramatically change the world economy and will likely continue to do so. AI advances could add some $13 trillion to global economic output by 2030, according to analysts.4 This includes the transport sector, where AI is expected to drive additional disruption. In 2017, the global market for transportation-related AI technologies reached $1.2 to $1.4 billion, according to estimates from global research firms. It could grow to $3.1 to $3.5 billion by 2023

Traffic Management Operations

Many AI algorithms are well-suited to solving complex problems such as those posed by traffic operation, and they are being used around the world. One example is SurTrac from Rapid Flow Technologies, a Carnegie Mellon University spinoff, which provides solutions for intelligent traffic signal controls. It has coordinated traffic flows at a network of nine traffic signals in three major roads in Pittsburgh.23 Rapid Flow helped reduce travel times by over 25 percent on average and wait times declined by an average of 40 percent during the trial. It also reduced stops by 30 percent and emissions by 20 percent.

Trucking is a key target for AI interventions, with cargo delivery as a potential early space for the adoption of AV technology across the world. In 2015, Uber bought driverless technology firm Otto and a year later it completed the first autonomous truck delivery carrying 50,000 cans of Budweiser beer over a distance of 120 miles from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs.26 Established players like Volvo, as well as trucking firms like Starsky, are also testing their own prototypes.

GE transportation has developed intelligent technologies to improve the efficiency of their locomotives. The smart-freight locomotives are equipped with sensors that collect data and feed it into a machine-learning application. The app analyzes the data and facilities a real-time application.

How AI is Enhancing Cybersecurity & Data Protection?

After transport, let’s talk about the role of AI in cybersecurity and data protection. There is no doubt that Cybersecurity is one of the most challenging issues we are facing these days. You often face multiple kinds of malware and anyone responsible for IT security knows that information security must now be assessed through a ‘prism of risk.’

Some people find it really difficult to cope and manage this malware and to get themselves protected as well as their devices, and data against every possible threat. According to Even Brian Dye, vice president of Symantec — a leading antivirus software developer — recently said, “It’s time to retire.”

The word “Retire” leads us towards the fact that modern malware is really smart, that it can even understand AI, or could be said that it learns as it goes. Now what companies should do? Well, there is only one way.

They need to fight AI with AI. There is no doubt that most of the businesses have already implemented artificial intelligence in cybersecurity issues. With the help of implementing this technology, you can prevent cyber attacks.

Let’s take an example of the researchers from MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) created a cyber-security monitoring system to scan 3.6 billion lines of code per day, purely to find errors and intrusions.

So these are some of the AI mechanisms which help us to protect ourselves and make us safer. Basically, what do they do, they just need to detect and identify an issue and after that, they automatically alert us about that particular cyber-attack, then blocking the threat before it gets the chance to take hold.

So, in this way, Artificial intelligence is helping us to protect us from the cyber-attacks and making our surroundings safer.

How AI is helping in Detecting crime?

Well, there are various technologies that are helping police these days to detect and fight against crime. And AI is one of the best technologies among them because it keeps the capability to predict the crime before it is going to happen or be committed.

But how is this possible?

Well, this has become possible only with the help of PrePol: a company that uses Big Data and Machine Learning in order to predict the time and place of potential offense.

PrePol’s software analyzes the existing data and on the basis of that previous experience related to past crimes, becomes able to predict when and where the upcoming crime is most likely to happen. PredPol researchers have even demonstrated how a police patrol using PredPol’s solution can achieve a 7.4% reduction in crime rate.

How AI is protecting the Military and Airforce?

Semi-Autonomous and Autonomous Vehicles

All U.S. military services are working to incorporate AI into semiautonomous and autonomous vehicles, including fighter aircraft, drones, ground vehicles, and naval vessels. AI applications in this field are similar to those for commercial semi-autonomous vehicles, which use AI technologies to perceive the environment, recognize obstacles, fuse sensor data, plan navigation, and even communicate with other vehicles.

The Air Force Research Lab completed phase-two tests of its Loyal Wingman program, which pairs an older-generation, uninhabited fighter jet (in this case, an F-16) with an inhabited F-35 or F-22. During this event, the uninhabited F-16 test platform autonomously reacted to events that were not preprogrammed, such as weather and unforeseen obstacles. As the program progresses, AI may enable the “loyal wingman” to accomplish tasks for its inhabited flight lead, such as jamming electronic threats or carrying extra weapons.

The Army and the Marine Corps tested prototypes of similar vehicles that follow soldiers or vehicles around the battlefield to accomplish independent tasks. For example, the Marine Corps’ Multi-Utility Tactical Transport (MUTT) is a remote-controlled, ATV-sized vehicle capable of carrying hundreds of pounds of extra equipment. Although the system is not autonomous in its current configuration, the Marine Corps intends for follow-on systems to have greater independence.

Final Words

So, this is how I explained how AI technology is making us safer in different fields and industries. I hope my information made you aware that Artificial Intelligence is one of the best technologies that is making our surroundings safer and secure.

Being a business, you can also suggest implementing this highly intelligent technology according to your business requirement. If you really find it exciting and important enough that it should be done, then you need to hire AI developers in India who can turn your ideas into reality.
