AI is no more a buzz, it’s right at your doorstep!

Artificial Intelligence is going to change the world more than anything in the history of mankind! said Dr. Kai-Fu Lee in 2018. And indeed we are experiencing the change.

But what does AI actually mean? It is intelligence given to machines by humans. Agree? This sentence is totally complete in itself. Science portrays AI as robots with human-like characteristics.

Whenever we talk of AI, the first and best example which comes in mind is, “ALEXA, play top 10 Bollywood songs” SIRI, OK Google, self-driving cars, etc are other real-world examples. Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s ALEXA, Microsoft’s Crotona, Google Now helps users to perform their daily tasks, from checking their schedule, searching something on the web to sending commands to other apps.

Digital assistants

AI is the most debated technology of this era. As it’s said, every coin has two sides, similarly, we can look at AI in two different ways. One is AI will take humanity to the next level of innovation in the near future and the second is the fear of the unknown future of AI. I will be talking about one of its sides, the innovative one.

Looking at the pace at which AI is being used, it will eventually lessen the interaction of human beings in day to day life. Challenges like business, economies, cancer, climate changes, etc can also be addressed through artificial intelligence.

Let’s have a look at how AI helps us in our daily life.

A lot of banks have already adopted AI-based systems to provide customer support, detect anomalies, and credit card frauds. One such example is the HDFC bank. It has an AI-based chatbot called EVA (Electronic Virtual Assistant). EVA has addressed 3 million customer queries and interacted with half a million unique users. EVA can collect knowledge from thousands of sources and provide simple answers in less than 0.4 seconds. Whoa! That’s faster as compared to other processes in the bank 😜 Quite commendable! And it saves time and resources of the bank.

Also, companies such as Mastercard and RBS WorldPay have relied on AI and Deep learning to detect fraudulent transaction patterns and prevent card frauds for years now. Be aware, you thieves!

AI in Farming

Agriculture and farming is the backbone of our nation. As the population continues to grow and land has become more scarce people have become more efficient about how we can yield more in less space. AI technology helps yield healthier crops, control pests, monitor soil, and crop growing conditions, etc. How?

AI helps farmers to analyze a variety of things in real-time such as weather conditions, temperature, water usage, soil conditions. AI technologies help farmers optimize planning to generate more beautiful yields by determining crop choice, hybrid choices, and resource utilization. AI systems are also helping to improve harvest quality and accuracy.

AI in Healthcare

AI is a boon to the healthcare industry

Artificial Intelligence simplifies the lives of doctors, patients, administrators performing tasks that are typically done by humans but in less time and that too with more efficiency. AI has countless applications in healthcare, whether it has been used to discover links between genetic code, to use surgical robots, or even maximize hospital efficiency.

An organization called Cambio Healthcare developed a clinical decision support system for stroke prevention that can give physicians a warning when there is a patient at risk of having a heart stroke. Another such example is a Coala company that has a digitalized device that can find cardiac diseases. Also, in the near future, we will be able to decide the genetics of our newborn. Whose parent genes should dominate in the offspring can be decided by us. Imagine, parents, deciding the colour of the eyes of the newborn who is yet to arrive. Sounds interesting in a fearful way.

AI in Marketing

Marketing is a way to sugar coat your products to attract more customers, and we humans are pretty amazing at it. And we taught the same to the machine. But what if an algorithm or a bot is built solely for the purpose of marketing a brand? It would be pretty amazing? Right?

In the early 2000s, if we searched any particular thing online with its name, it was not easy as it is today for us to find it. But today when we search for one particular thing, we get all possible results related to it. And it (search engine) also shows us some different things which we might be interested in.

How? Is someone reading our minds? So it’s like the search engine reads our minds! Infraction of seconds we get all the information available to us.

Let us talk about Netflix, no no not about the series on it but on the way it works the reason internally. How does Netflix suggest the content to us? And to surprise, it’s of our interest. It has a high predictive technology that sees the trends, behaviour, reactions to the content, and many more such things to predict the most accurate content. And they appear in our suggestions. Interesting? Someone(not a living being) is watching us all the time.

AI in Space Exploration

AI has brought us one step close to exploring space a bit more

Space expeditions and discoveries require analyzing large amounts of data that is difficult to be analyzed by human intelligence. AI and ML(Machine Learning) is the best way to handle and process the data on this scale. The data may help researchers find life on new planets. It can help and identify map patterns that are not possible by humans, it also can help us to know the right conditions that support human life on the planet.

The data that we receive from the space is in the form of images, the challenge is to decode the image and extract the information. Here, ML comes into the picture.

The NASA Frontier development lab and some of the giant companies such as IBM and Microsoft have come together to leverage ML as a solution for solar storm damage detection, atmosphere measurement, and determining the ‘space weather’ of a given planet. Through AI applications, the geological makeup and historical significance of a planet can be known. Not only this but AI can also send, analyze, classify images of the same and decide the next best action.

Concluding the blog with some questions for you to think upon. AI is making our lives simple for sure, but isn’t it making us dependent and lazy? Will AI be responsible for reducing human jobs? We are becoming smarter and making machines smarter too. Can the machine’s smartness overcome ours?
