“[AI] is going to change the world more than anything in the history of mankind. More than electricity.” — AI oracle and venture capitalist Dr. Kai-Fu Lee, 2018.

Artificial intelligence has an impact on the future of practically every human being and every industry. AI has acted as the main driver of emerging technologies, like big data & robotics, and will continue to act as a technological innovator for the foreseeable future. Experts in this field have predicted that networked artificial intelligence will amplify human effectiveness but also threaten human autonomy, agency and capabilities.

But the bottom line is that nobody can fully predict what the future of Artificial Intelligence will actually bring. Although AI systems are replacing certain workers’ jobs, there’s a chance that it create more jobs than it displaces. AI could potentially offer new tools for entrepreneurs, it may also create new lines of business that aren’t even imaginable now.

From everything we’ve seen its quite obvious that interacting with AI will soon become an everyday activity. Artificial Intelligence can be used to tackle profoundly difficult problems and find solutions that are important to human wellbeing. These developments are generating substantial economic and social benefits. At the same time, it poses the greatest ethical challenge we have yet to face. Artificial Intelligence has the potential to move civilisation forward in progressive ways. But the way AI systems are developed needs to be better understood due to the major implications the technology will have for society as a whole.

As emerging algorithm-driven artificial intelligence continues to spread, will people be better off than they are today?
