How AI is helping Google Search become more intelligent — AI

Google today revealed the secret sauce behind its search engine. Before you jump for joy & start reading this article, here’s the thing — Google, at its Search Online Event talked of the achievements in artificial intelligence (AI) & the involvement of the latter in search & other products. AI, claimed Google, had made it even easier for you to find just what you’re looking for.

Helping you find exactly what you’re
looking for

At the heart of Google Search is the ability to understand a query & rank relevant results for that query. Google said it had invested deeply in language understanding research. Last year, it had introduced how BERT language understanding systems that were now helping to deliver more “relevant results in Google Search.”

Google said BERT was now being used in almost every query in English. The other advancements were applied to:

Spelling: Google was now introducing a new spelling algorithm that uses a deep neural net to significantly improve its ability to decipher misspellings. In fact, this single change makes a greater improvement to spelling than all of other improvements over the last five years.

Passages: Very specific searches can be the hardest to get right, since sometimes the single sentence that answers your question might be buried deep in a Web page. Google claimed it had made a “breakthrough in ranking” & was now able to not just index web pages, but individual passages from the pages. By better understanding the relevancy of specific passages, not just the overall page, it was able to find that needle-in-a-haystack information you’re looking for.

Subtopics: Google said it had applied neural nets to understand subtopics around an interest. As an example, if you search for “home exercise equipment,” Google can now understand relevant subtopics, such as budget equipment, premium picks, or small space ideas, & show a wider range of Content in the search results page. This shall be rolled out by the end of this year.
