Is augmented reality artificial intelligence?
Augmented reality and artificial intelligence (AI) are the two most promising technologies for developers. AR is not exactly the same as AI. AR deals with overlaying virtual experiences in the real world from a product’s perspective. AI on the other hand can be seen as facilitating the AR application for performing its task. AI refers to a wide set of technologies that are capable of adding intelligence to machines and creating interesting stuff. In augmented reality, a 3D representation of the world must be constructed to allow digital objects to exist alongside physical ones. Most of these tasks are still done using traditional computer vision techniques that don’t involve AI. However, Deep Learning (a branch of AI) has significantly improved computer vision tasks. Due to this AR experiences now make use of AI techniques for better experience and results. Well- known organizations and research labs are working on integrating AI with AR. Fritz labs came up with a live people occluding app (occlusion is making something opaque) that is built using AI-based computer vision applied to augmented reality. In all, AR and AI are complementary technologies and smaller and faster AI models will be the engines of AR technologies.
