Art+AI Expertise

Mike has worked with neural nets since 2015 and uses techniques ranging from convolutional neural nets and generative adversarial networks to transformer architectures for text generation.

Work with AI

In 2015 Mike created some of the first large-scale artworks using neural nets, e.g. using Iterative DeepDream. In 2017 he collaborated with Refik Anadol to create a pioneering projection installation using Generative Adversarial Networks: “Archive Dreaming”.

His series “Portraits of Imaginary People” has been shown at ARS Electronica in Linz, Christie’s in New York and at the New Museum in Karuizawa, Japan. His kinetic, AI-driven sculpture “Us and Them” was shown at the Seoul Museum of Art and at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo.

All nascent technologies have affected society (and thus art) when they arrive, but the pace of change today is unprecedented. Machine Intelligence will force us to reexamine all of our assumptions about society and it’s structure, for better and for worse.
