OpenCL Compute Broken on AMD’s Navi Cards Since Launch; All Radeon RX 5700, 5700 XT GPUs Affected
AMD’s Navi GPUs have met with a positive response ever since they were launched earlier this year. The Radeon RX 5700 is one of my favorite cards as well. The RX 5700 XT although a decent GPU has its flaws, the core issues being lack of overclocking ability and poor thermals. Regardless, these GPUs offer stiff competition to NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 2060 Super and 2070 Super.
If not for AMD, we’d still be stuck with the vanilla RTX 20 series cards and their godawful prices. The Navi based RX 5700 series is special for a bunch of reasons. It’s the first “real” 7nm GPU lineup and team red’s first series to come with the newer GDDR6 memory standard. Furthermore, it also ditches the ancient GCN architecture in favor of the newer, gaming-centric RDNA design.
While the gaming performance is top-notch, many professionals have been having some major issues with OpenCL Compute. According to numerous sources, OpenCL hasn’t been working properly on the Navi GPUs since launch, leading to invalid and misleading results.
What’s worse is that many Databases aren’t able to detect these invalid results, leading to possible corruption of OpenCL based Databases. In case you’re running an RX 5700 series card, kindly refrain from using it for OpenCL Compute. This includes Online Science Databases such as SETI, Geekbench, etc. We’ll let you know as soon as AMD fixes this issue.
