The Forthcoming AI revolution in Education Industry

The industrial and digital revolution have brought substantial changes in all aspects of our society and life. These revolutions have considerably reduced human efforts and made work more efficient in nearly every sector. Now the world is gearing up for another revolution which would be brought by the advancements in AI technologies, providing vast opportunities and productivity improvements in various product and services domains. One such domain is the field of education and learning.

With the advances in computer vision and neural networks, AI technologies are sought to bring promising changes in the way students all over the world would learn and gain education. Adaptive learning — which means right content delivered at right amount at right moment for individual needs — is the forthcoming way of learning and attaining education. Regarding adaptive learning there has been a lot of research going on over the world with various firms taking up initiatives to understand AI driven education and penetrate it in the market. For instance, in China, a country where privacy of its individuals completely lies in the hands of their government, there are various new firms already started this trend by installing cameras in the classrooms for capturing the students behaviour while studying. The data is taken and is fed to the systems where deep learning algorithms analyse it and then develop various metrics, such as how long the student is active in class , for how long his head was down or he was taking to someone or yawning,etc, and then each student is given scores based on these metrics. The scores would then be used by teachers to give each student the required training and improve their performance.

There are also various adaptive learning applications been developed where students can learn at their own without the need of a human teacher. Each student performance data in every subject is fed and saved on the application and then the application itself deliver the right content as required by the student. It can then assess the student on his learning and modify future learning plan according to what is beneficial to the student. Like this the student can get amount of knowledge at the right time. This technique can also reduce the achievement gaps between urban and rural students which lack proper school infrastructure.

With all these advantages that AI technologies provide also comes certain disadvantages. Installing cameras and capturing student behaviour all the time, raises privacy related issues among the students and their parents. They may tend to develop anxiety knowing that are being continuously monitored. Also, students may tend to loose their natural behaviour as their each activity is been recorded and people can tend to judge them over it. Moreover, there are some areas where human teacher learning process dominate over machine learning process. Human teacher helps students learns social skills. They help students to gain insights and learn by interacting with the environment and society. This is where human edge over machines which deliver learning by storing millions of data images in its system.

These advantages of human teacher based learning need to be looked closely in the road to develop AI driven education systems in the future. Proper regulations by the government is required concerning the privacy of the individuals and their data must be protected from unauthorised access. A system with good mix of both human teacher and machine based learning needs to be developed such that both can deliver their respective skills to the students. Currently AI need not to be better than human teacher to improve education system, it just need to be good enough to be at the right time and right place to supplement the learning process which certainly seems possible in the near future.
