The Sad Reality of Being a ML Engineer in a Old World Company…

So on my last post I explained my odyssey of getting into the ML world. It has been a long and fun ride so far, but lately I have been extremely disappointed, both in myself and in the company I’m currently working for. I took a job as a Co-Op Machine Learning Engineer in a big medical device company in the middle of Texas. When I talked to the boss of the plant, they assured me that even doe they had no other ML Engineer on the plant that I would be unequivocally working with ML & DL. I had my doubts, but this is a huge company that has been in the market for medical devices for YEARSSSSSS. Therefor I gave them a chance and decided to pick up my bags and move to Texas.

Fast forward to a month into the job… I have not written a line of code, looked at a single database, or even have access to a computer with capabilities to run a NN. I have been bamboozled. I guess I am writing this as a method of expression because I have been very furious the last couple of weeks. They seem to not understand the technology or how to implement it to their process. I hope to have a meeting with my boss soon where I can express my feelings to him, but for now I will just continue doing everyday work just like everybody there not in a “ML Engineer Co-Op” position.
