Two Fundamental Types of Robotics
The Fundamental Problem in Robotics
The Robots we’ve been building for decades now are physically perfectly capable of doing a wide range of useful tasks.
But the problem is that we can’t embed them with the needed intelligence to do those things.
So basically creating state-of-the-art robotics is a software challenge ‘Not’ a hardware problem.
How does Japan make Robots versus America?
We are not talking about the mechanical or engineering process of making robots.
We are referring to a Philosophy.
In the second half of 20th century when industrial robots became prevalent in Japan, Japan believed that Robots should be made to what they do best, and that the environment and mechanisms should be designed around them which lets them do their jobs.
On the other hand America believed that Robots should be able to do everything as good as humans on their own. And they spent the second half of the 20th century trying to make such all capability robots in vain.
Needless to say Japan became the most successful with robots.
Robots & The Endless Pursuit of AGI
Some believe that Robots are “machines” who’s primary purpose is to do things better, faster, more efficiently, reliably, cheaper and safer.
Others spend their time in the endless pursuit of A.G.I. (Artificial General Intelligence) or aka endless pursuit of Terminators.
If we really want to use machines/Robots to assist humans. Then we have to continue to do what Japan has done earlier. e.g. putting them at tasks which they can do better, faster, safer, cheaper etc. …
If we continue to focus on AGI then we will stall and prevent mankind from the benefits they can derive from using machines.
Today our machines are way better than the earlier generations. But somehow the pursuit of AGI has overshadowed the practical applications of robotics. By now robots should have been pervasive all around us. But that has not happened. Somewhere because we still believe in the American philosophy of robotics and engage in the endless pursuit of A.G.I.
