VERITY’S REINFORCES ITS COMMITMENT TO TRUTH BY TAKING THE PRO-TRUTH PLEDGE
As media chaos around COVID-19 ensues, the new standard for credible information pledges truthfulness
Verity has signed the Pro-Truth Pledge. This the commitment by Verity to promoting the 12 truth-promoting behaviors. The pledge was designed to help organizations, public figures and ordinary citizens fight misinformation, protect facts and restore civility. Verity democratizes access to credible information by using AI and machine-learning algorithms for search and evaluation, because credible information is the foundation of shared understanding. As a new strain of coronavirus, COVID-19, sweeps across the globe, today’s media ecosystem has become a nexus where good, scrupulous reporting appears alongside opinions, conspiracy theories, misinformation, and uninformed claims. Verity is launching its COVID-19 Credibility Tracker which will produce a weekly round-up of COVID-19 articles with their associated Verity Scores making it easier for users to know what’s credible and what isn’t.
Verity joins over 202 organizations and 10,000 people have signed the Pro-Truth Pledge whose mission is “to encourage people and organizations to commit to truth-oriented behaviors and protect facts and civility.” The Pro-Truth Pledge is a project of Intentional Insights, an educational and nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit, devoted to promoting truth, rational thinking, and wise decision-making.
The Verity platform uses natural language process to map and highlight any indications of bias or error in the content and indexed news stories from around the web for scoring. Next, the proprietary artificial intelligence engine then analyzes those indications and scores the content in real time. The engine employs 56 different algorithms from its partner Credibility to assess indications, covering a wide range of bias or error including among others:
· Title Representativeness
· Hyperbolic Language
· Quotes from Outside Experts
· Citation of Organizations and Studies
· Reputation of Citations
Finally, the engine generates a score which can be applied to the content itself, the site on which it appears, and when available the author of the content. This assessment process allows users to evaluate a wide range of content areas with mathematically based objectivity and use the Credibility Score to know how much they can trust what they’re reading.
